Could an Israeli Spyware Ad Have Hacked Your Device? Free Open-Source Tool Searches for Traces
October 20, 2026
THE ADS YOU SCROLL PAST CAN INFECT YOUR DEVICE. HERE’S HOW TO CHECK.
Citizen Lab just exposed something that should worry everyone. An Israeli ad-tech company, Discover-Tech, bought ordinary online ads that carried hidden code. Those ads routed devices to servers run by Candiru, an Israeli spyware firm blacklisted by the US government in 2021. Nobody had to click on anything. Just seeing the ad was enough.
Citizen Lab tied at least 45 Al Jazeera devices, used by journalists in 2024 and 2025, to the attack. The ads ran on more than 120,000 websites and 75,000 apps between March and June 2026. Google and IAB Europe have since dropped Discover-Tech from their vendor lists, and Citizen Lab hasn’t said who ordered the attacks.
Journalists were the targets. Everyone else was the cover.
@archive.genocide built a free tool, Zero Breach, to check whether your Windows PC has traces of the campaign. It only reads files, changes nothing, needs no admin rights and never connects to the internet. It checks 338 indicators.
