UNC Students Say Trump Administration Is “Blackmailing” University to Censor Campus Speech
October 21, 2026
ISRAEL BOMBS GAZA. AMERICAN STUDENTS GET DISCIPLINED FOR OBJECTING.
Frankie Stockes (@realstockes_tbr ), American reporter, spoke about the University of North Carolina’s new deal with the Trump administration: “The University of North Carolina is being blackmailed by the Trump administration and its handlers as part of a censorship scheme targeting students, and eventually, everyone else.”
That’s the world UNC-Chapel Hill just signed on to. On Monday, the university settled with the Trump administration to end 18 federal investigations, and the price is written into the deal: mandatory antisemitism training, a ban on face coverings at protests, and a rule that student groups “shall be subject to discipline for antisemitic discriminatory conduct.”
Why is this happening? Reuters reports the administration has targeted universities with probes and funding threats over pro-Palestinian protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza. A former Justice Department attorney said in a whistleblower complaint that those probes lacked evidence and had predetermined outcomes.
Think about what that means. A war that human rights groups and UN experts call a genocide, funded by American tax dollars, and the people being punished are students who stood up and said so.
Critics of these deals warn that “antisemitism” is being stretched to cover criticism of Israel, and that campuses are being forced to police speech about a foreign government. Stockes calls it a censorship scheme that starts with students and ends with everyone else.
UNC and the DOJ say the deal is voluntary and won’t control academic speech. When your federal funding is on the line, “voluntary” has a price tag.
If a university can be pressured into disciplining students for protesting Israel, whose interests are being protected?
