French Police Officer Accused of Treating Protesters Differently Based on Race

French human rights lawyers say teenagers hurt by police weapons during the country’s biggest youth protest movement in decades have suffered injuries that resemble those of war.

Evan, 15, lost his left hand to a police stun grenade outside his school in Lens on 5 October. Eden, 14, suffered two jaw fractures and lost his bottom teeth after a grenade launcher was allegedly fired at him from about 1.5 metres. An officer has been suspended and placed under investigation.

Police have opened 36 internal investigations into alleged officer violence, including four cases of children allegedly “mutilated” by explosive weapons, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told the Senate. The Béthune prosecutor says the grenade in Evan’s case was picked up from the ground. His lawyer denies it.

Hundreds of high schools have been blockaded by students demanding replacement teachers and repairs to decrepit buildings.
