“Stop Rewarding Israel”: Irish MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin Urges EU to Scrap Israel Trade Deal

HOSPITALS BOMBED. SCHOOLS FLATTENED. POPULATIONS STARVED. AND THE EU’S TRADE DEAL WITH ISRAEL CONTINUES.
That’s the question Ó Ríordáin is putting to Brussels: how can the European Union still be in business with a government accused of what he calls genocide, and the killing of more than 70,000 Palestinians?
The facts back up the problem he’s pointing to. The EU is Israel’s biggest trading partner, with €42.6 billion in trade in 2024. The EU-Israel Association Agreement has a human rights clause, Article 2, that says relations must be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles. UN experts and many Palestinian groups say Israel is breaching it. A European Citizens’ Initiative to suspend the deal has passed one million signatures. And the European Commission’s answer so far has been a proposal for only a partial suspension.
Look at what that means. Europe cut ties with Russia within days. For Israel, it keeps the trade flowing and the tariff-free access in place.
International law isn’t a menu. If a human rights clause can be ignored when it’s inconvenient, it isn’t worth the paper it’s on.
