Canadian MP Heather McPherson Presses Government to Block Israeli Takeovers of Canadian Companies
October 23, 2026
Heather McPherson, NDP Member of Parliament for Edmonton Strathcona, questions the government in the House of Commons.
“WHY IS THIS GOVERNMENT ALLOWING ISRAELI COMPANIES BLACKLISTED FOR GENOCIDE TO BUY CANADIAN COMPANIES?”
This week, Israeli defense giant Elbit Systems completed its acquisition of International Submarine Engineering, a Vancouver-area maker of autonomous underwater vehicles. Weeks earlier, another Israeli company took over an offshore project owned by Suncor.
McPherson’s charge: both companies are on a United Nations blacklist for complicity in genocide and the illegal occupation of Palestine. And she notes that this government has promised to ban trade with illegal settlements and has told Canadian businesses not to deal with companies like these.
So she asked a simple question: will the federal government step in to stop the acquisition?
The government’s answer, from the parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister: peace is “constantly on our mind,” Canada will “do everything” to protect the rights of Palestinians and Israelis, and “we continue to investigate.”
That’s it. Not a yes. Not a no. A promise to keep looking while the deal closes.
Canada says it stands for international law. Then it lets a blacklisted arms giant walk in and buy a piece of the country.
Words don’t stop acquisitions. Laws do.
Ask your MP why this was allowed, and what exactly they’re investigating.
