Dutch satirist Arjen Lubach has noticed something: Donald Trump’s 9/11 story keeps getting bigger.
First he watched it on TV. Then he was an eyewitness. Then he sent people to help. Then he was the one helping. And now, apparently, two firefighters saved his life. Every year the story grows, and somehow Trump ends up more of a hero.
Lubach takes that trend and runs with it, past all reason. By the end Trump is carrying fifty people down the stairs, landing a hijacked plane on the “Trump River,” riding a dragon, stopping the Titanic with a time portal, and replacing God, who he calls “Sleepy God.”
It’s a sketch, so none of the absurd parts are real quotes. The joke is where the escalation starts. Trump has told his own 9/11 story in different ways over the years, and the real versions are strange enough that the parody barely has to stretch.
