Lula Wins Fourth Term as Brazilian Youth Turn Out to Stem Rise of Far Right in Latin America

LULA WINS A FOURTH TERM
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva beat Flávio Bolsonaro, 51.8% to 48.2%, a margin of more than 4.4 million votes, according to Brazil’s electoral court. And it’s historic: nobody had won a runoff after losing the first round since Brazil returned to direct elections in 1989.
Think about who was on the other side. Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving 27 years for plotting a coup. A candidate reportedly backed by Donald Trump, who has spent months threatening Brazil with tariffs and sanctions over this family. Trump put his weight behind the Bolsonaros, and Brazilian voters said no.
And what does Lula represent that Washington and Tel Aviv couldn’t stomach? He called Israel’s war in Gaza what he thinks it is, and Israel responded by declaring him persona non grata. Brazil recalled its ambassador and moved to join South Africa’s genocide case at the International Court of Justice. A leader who stood up to Trump and Netanyahu just won again.
Students marched through Rio chanting “Never again Bolsonaro” and held signs saying “Brazil isn’t anyone’s backyard.” Brazil answered at the ballot box.
Flávio Bolsonaro was reportedly refusing to concede. The father tried to overturn an election. The son can’t even admit he lost one.
Lula returns to power facing a hostile Congress and a hard road. But tonight, Brazil’s message to Trump and the global far right is simple: you don’t own this continent.

English Script:
Lula: I want to thank the generosity of the Brazilian youth who took the streets to defend democracy.
Bolsonaro: It is impossible, impossible to recognize the election results in the context of how it unfolded. We are going to use our legal team and we’re going to ask for this election to be invalidated
Lula: I want to tell you that as we win the election, we no longer have opponents. I have to govern for 215 million. I have to govern for all ages. I can guarantee to you that we are going to change the way this country is governed. I want to tell you that we are going to make the people participate more in our decisions. But I wanted to thank the Brazilian people for the generosity they have shown me for a long time, and in this second round, thank the generosity of the Brazilian youth who went to the streets, went to the streets to defend democracy.
