“This Isn’t Havana”: U.S. Envoy Mike Waltz and Cuba’s Foreign Minister Clash at UN Over 60-Year Embargo
October 28, 2026“THIS ISN’T HAVANA”: THE US AND CUBA SHOUT IT OUT AT THE UN
On October 27, US Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla clashed on the floor of the UN General Assembly during the annual debate on the US embargo on Cuba, and proceedings were briefly suspended.
It started when Waltz used his speech to attack Cuba’s government, accusing its leaders of corruption and urging countries to reject the resolution against the embargo. Rodríguez walked toward the front of the hall and raised a point of order, calling the US ambassador a liar. Waltz shot back: “This isn’t Havana.”
Behind the shouting is a vote that has been taken 33 times before. The General Assembly votes this week for the 34th year on a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo, which has been in place for more than six decades. Last year it passed 165 to 7, with 12 abstentions.
Cuban officials say this year the US is pressuring other countries to vote against the resolution, which Washington hasn’t confirmed. They also say recent US fuel restrictions are devastating Cuba’s health system, a claim the US disputes, arguing the island’s problems come from its own leaders.
Today’s vote is the 34th. If the world still says no to the embargo, will Washington listen this time?
What are your thoughts?
