“Silence Empowers Oppression”: Sheffield United Footballer Hamza Choudhury Calls for Athlete Action Over Gaza
October 30, 2026“SILENCE BASICALLY EMPOWERS OPPRESSION.” HAMZA CHOUDHURY IS USING HIS PLATFORM FOR THE CHILDREN OF GAZA.
Sheffield United midfielder and Bangladesh international Hamza Choudhury is using his platform beyond the pitch, helping to raise more than $130,000 for the children of Gaza.
The footballer sent a powerful message to global figures and fellow athletes about the dangers of staying quiet during humanitarian crises.
His message to the sports world is blunt. “Silence basically empowers oppression. The oppressors win by us keeping quiet. It’s our duty as role models, whether you like it or not, to use your voice for a good cause.”
Where the money goes: The London fundraiser, run with Nujum Sports, supports Children Not Numbers. The funds are allocated to the urgent medical evacuation and life-saving care of children badly affected by the war.
It isn’t his first stand. Choudhury has backed Gaza fundraisers before. In 2024 he took part in Nujum Sports’ Children of Gaza charity match in London, alongside other Premier League players. And he’s reported to have raised the Palestinian flag on the pitch after an FA Cup win.
In a sport that often tells players to stay quiet, here’s one who says the opposite: speaking up is the job.
