Rutgers University students dismantled their pro-Palestine encampment on the New Brunswick campus after university administrators agreed to 8 out of their 10 demands including divesting from investments tied with Israel!!!
Dozens of tents were erected for ONLY 4 DAYS! In this period, the students managed to negotiate and put pressure on the University to accept most of their demands.
Rutgers New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway said the resolution was “achieved through constructive dialogue” between protesting students and administrators. The agreement “opens the door for ongoing dialogue and better addresses the needs” of the 7,000 Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian students who attend Rutgers.
The protestors had made a list of 10 demands for the university, listing their two top priorities as getting Rutgers to divest its financial holdings from companies with ties to Israel or benefitting from the war, and to sever its partnership with Tel Aviv University.
Organizers said administrators granted all their demands except two which Conway said “fall outside of our administrative scope.” The divestment request is under review, she added.
But, the students HAVE NOT GIVEN UP! They remain in talks to continue pressure on the administration to SEVER ties with Israel!

I know things are awful and we’re not, we haven’t stopped the invasion of Rafah and we still need to keep going. But I really thought we were about to get all arrested and now we’re here. So please tell us about what you did and how you set the bar for the rest of the country and what we should be demanding elsewhere.
Student at Rutgers: 3 hours ago. We thought that all of us were going to be getting arrested. And here we are now. We have just accepted a demand from the Chancellor’s office accepting eight out of the ten of our demands that we offered and demanded of the administration at the beginning of this encampment four days ago. So on day four, we got eight of the ten of our demands, the two demands, we did not get are divestment and ending our partnership with TAU. But we did get a meeting with the people who control divestment so that we’re not we’re not stopping. We’re still going.
Noura Erakat: No, how do you ever stop? We don’t stop until we liberate.
Student at Rutgers: Exactly. And the other eight demands that we got. We got an Arab Cultural Center plan by the start of fall 2022, we got 10,000 students accepted on scholarship to Rutgers University. We got a memorandum of understanding incoming inshallah with Birzeit university. Rutgers has committed to hiring senior administrators who have cultural competency, who know the backgrounds of our Muslim, Arab and Palestinian students. Rutgers has committed to full amnesty for all students, faculty and staff.
Noura Erakat: That’s right.
Student at Rutgers: Who have been participating in this in encampment over the past four days, and anti-Palestinian racism, including Nakba denial being added into DEI trainings for all faculty and staff. And here’s the thing. We are not stopping on divestment. Divestment is our number one goal, we’re still going. But what we got today is huge. We got eight out of our ten demands.
