Israel’s Racial Domination is Illegal – Francesca Albanese

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian territories, said that Israel CANNOT claim the right of ‘self-defence’ under international law because Gaza is a territory which it occupies. Her comments came in a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra, Australia, this week which left many in the audience uncomfortable as it didn’t seem to meet the narrative they have been told to push.

Watch her amazing response to a journalist about her comment regarding Israel’s racial domination. Her professional, legitimate and legally-based reply – shut him up!

(Francesca Albanese) How would you expect the Palestinians to want to leave subjugated, I mean one or ten or 50, 50 more years? No, I mean, there shouldn’t be domination. But particularly, let me say it has a very specific meaning in the occupied Palestinian territory where Israel dominates without any legal justification or basis. The occupation is illegal.

00:00:27:21 – 00:00:56:28

It’s unlawful because it operates against and outside of everything that is permitted under international law, because it’s been a vehicle to colonize the land, it serves no military necessity and it’s also apartheid by default, because having civilian law imposed on I mean, applied to the the settlers who shouldn’t be there in the first place, which doesn’t mean that a two state solution would translate into the uprooting of them.

00:00:57:01 – 00:01:19:28

No no, I’m not calling for that, but I’m just saying that the occupation must end. The exploitation of Palestinian land and resources must end. And then it’s up to the Palestinians and Israelis to live, to see how to live together in whatever forms of state they can envisage. It’s not up to us. But for me, it’s really about basic application of international law.

00:01:20:01 – 00:01:43:28

(Unknown) You’ve applied it to that particular context, but you don’t think the word domination has a wider connotation outside that context.

(Francesca Albanese) what do you mean?

(Unknown) I’m talking about Israeli Jewish domination.

(Francesca Albanese) Meaning, are you asking me in Israel?

(Unknown) Well, just the phrase jumped out at me at the end of your speech. And I’m just wondering if the trope of domination

(Francesca Albanese) No it’s not a trope, it’s really real. So it seems you don’t understand what I’m saying. There is an apartheid regime. No, I’m serious. There is an apartheid regime, Its domination. This is not a trope This is international law. I encourage you to read the apartheid convention because it talks about racial domination and this is what I’m talking about, it might be a trope into your sorry, into the way you interpret it, but I’m using domination in a strictly legal sense.

00:02:11:13 – 00:02:16:00

(Unknown) Thank you very much.

(Francesca Albanese) You’re welcome
