Valerie Tarazi: I strive to represent Palestine every single day of my life. I train at my university and I wear a flag on my cap every single day. I didn’t choose to leave, my grandfather did not choose to leave Gaza. We were simply kicked out and we could not return. My house is still in Gaza. It’s right outside of Rafah and we have no idea what happened to it. Our goal is to inspire the younger generation. Sport has given us more than we could ever ask for. It’s given us an identity, it’s given us something greater than ourselves, a greater purpose. We stand with the flag to represent the millions of Palestinians around the world who have been silenced, who have been censored, who don’t have a voice and that is our goal, is we want to stand for those people who can’t.
