Brazilian Activist Thiago Ávila Dictates Heartbreaking Letter to Daughter After Gaza Flotilla Detention
May 5, 2026
Brazilian humanitarian and Global Sumud Flotilla leader Thiago Ávila has dictated a powerful, gut-wrenching letter to his young daughter, Teresa, from an Israeli prison cell. Seized by the Israeli Navy in international waters on April 29, 2026, Ávila remains one of only two activists still held in custody after the abduction of nearly 180 international volunteers.
Writing through his lawyer, Ávila explained to his daughter that his absence is the result of a historical task: refusing to live in a world that accepts the starvation and genocide of over a million children.
From inside a cell in Israel, Ávila told his daughter, “I hope someday you understand that because I love you so much, there was nothing more dangerous for you than a world that accepts genocide”.
Thiago’s message to Teresa is a haunting reminder of the cost of conscience. While the Israeli court continues to extend his detention without formal charges, his words stand as a testament to those who refuse to stay silent while children are starved under siege.
