By 2022, the system Microsoft custom built for unit 8200 was operational. The unit used Microsoft’s Azure platform to store and analyze millions of intercepted Palestinian phone calls. According to leaked internal Microsoft documents obtained by The Guardian and Plus 970 magazine, Microsoft executives even characterized the deal as an incredibly powerful brand moment for the company, where Tel Aviv launched its war on Palestine’s Gaza in October 2023. The Israeli military’s use of Microsoft services exploded, jumping more than 155% by July 2024. The volume of Palestinian data stored in Microsoft’s servers reached a staggering 13.6PB. Intelligence sources confirmed that Israel used this data to plan and execute lethal airstrikes in Gaza. All the while, Microsoft stated publicly it had found no evidence its technology was being used to harm Palestinians. So why the firings now? While Microsoft says they are the result of an ethics probe, the reality is likely more clinical legal liability. The Israeli surveillance operation ran on servers located in the Netherlands and Ireland, putting Microsoft at massive risk under EU privacy laws despite years of employee protests under the banner “No Azure for apartheid”. Microsoft only acted once after launching what it called an “urgent external inquiry” following a joint investigation by The Guardian and +972 magazine in 2025. In the fallout, Microsoft Israel has been placed under the management of Microsoft France. On September 26th, 2025, six major human rights organizations all sent a joint letter to Microsoft demanding that it suspend all business with the Israeli military and government bodies. Microsoft has not fully complied with these demands, despite the firings, the ethics probes, and the confirmed surveillance. Microsoft is reportedly seeking to renew its contract with Israel’s Ministry of Defense later in 2026.
