In a terrifying escalation of Islamophobic violence, a gunman launched a targeted assault on a San Diego mosque, throwing the local Muslim community into absolute shock and mourning.
When prime ministers and party leaders across the West use their massive platforms to brand Muslims as “threats” and demonize peaceful anti-war protesters, they are hand-delivering the fuel to radicalized extremists.
The local community was shattered when a perpetrator targeted a mosque during prayer, leaving a trail of trauma and fear. Civil rights groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), had spent months warning that the non-stop demonization of Muslims in public discourse would inevitably lead to real-world bloodshed.
The media and political establishment are quick to cry national security when people march for peace, but they consistently look the other way when far-right figures spread venomous, anti-Muslim conspiracy theories online and on TV.
Houses of worship are supposed to be sanctuaries. Instead, because of a manufactured atmosphere of fear, mosques across the globe are being forced to turn into high-security fortresses just to protect innocent families, children, and elders during prayer.
The politicians who normalized this hatred have blood on their hands.
