Journalist Miguel Delaney has raised concerns that U.S. travel restrictions on certain nations could conflict with commitments made as a host of the FIFA World Cup.
A tournament meant to unite nations cannot selectively close its doors to some of them.
The World Cup is built on inclusion, competition, and equal participation. If athletes, officials, journalists, or supporters from qualifying nations face barriers to entry, it raises serious questions about fairness and the integrity of the world’s biggest sporting event.

Miguel Delaney: There’s also a more specific legal and technical context, which is when a World Cup is awarded, because obviously countries really vive for this because what it is a global party. There are also all sorts of contractual provisions about how a tournament basically has to give certain guarantees, literal guarantees of the terms used about freedom of movement for participating nations, about kind of entry and all this sort of thing by FIFA evidently has. And this despite Infantino’s very craven relationship with Donald Trump, hasn’t been able to secure those guarantees. And there’s obviously an extra dimension is because all of this has been flagged. I mean, you mentioned there kind about white supremacy there. Well, I mean, it’s not a co, like all of the countries or all of the individuals that have faced issues so far have been from Muslim countries. And of course, this is on the back of one of Trump’s executive orders was colloquially referred to as the Muslim ban.
