Marcus Mumford Tells UN: 520 Million Children Live in Conflict Zones, Demands Gaza Accountability
October 4, 2026
Marcus Mumford, War Child Alliance Global Ambassador, addressed the United Nations on the impact of explosive weapons on children living through conflict.
Mumford said the number of children affected by conflict has risen from 230 million in 2014 to more than 520 million today. He also shared the story of Khaled, an eight-year-old Palestinian boy whose family was killed when an Israeli airstrike destroyed the home where they had sought refuge in Gaza.
He’s spent years as a War Child ambassador, from his first trip to Jerusalem to volunteering after Grenfell Tower burned down blocks from where he lived. He knows the difference between a statistic and a child who has to live with what that statistic actually means — the explosion that lasts seconds, the trauma, the lost limb, the lost childhood, that lasts a lifetime.
Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, the DRC, different wars, same math: a generation of children paying for conflicts they had no part in starting.
A legal responsibility can be debated. A moral duty can’t be outsourced.
WE MUST DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY.
