Abdul El-Sayed Draws Standing-Room Crowds in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Despite “Cold Welcome” Prediction

THEY PREDICTED A COLD WELCOME. THE UP SHOWED UP ANYWAY.
Via @abdulelsayed : “He’s gonna go up to the Upper Peninsula and get a pretty cold welcome.”
Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for US Senate in Michigan, took his campaign to the Upper Peninsula. It’s a mostly conservative part of the state that Democrats rarely visit. Someone predicted he’d be met with a “pretty cold welcome.”
That’s not what happened. People who came to see him said they were thrilled, and one attendee said, “Nobody ever bothers to come to the Upper Peninsula.” He did. He brought Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and made three stops in a single day.
What he talked about was what people there are living with: the cost of gas and groceries, and health care. Many in the UP have to drive 100 miles or more to see a specialist or to give birth. He backs Medicare for All and getting money out of politics.
He also spoke to voters who chose Trump. Many told him they voted that way because they hate politics. His answer: he’s something different.
Meanwhile, the pro-Israel lobby has spent tens of millions of dollars against him, and attack ads have linked him to terrorism without evidence, according to local reporting. He’s kept campaigning anyway.
The election is November 3. Michigan will decide how warm the welcome really was.
