Francesca Albanese Defends Greens’ “Zionism Is Racism” Motion After Andy Burnham Calls It Antisemitic
October 21, 2026
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese speaks with Ahmed Alnaouq and Jehan Alfarra of Palestine Deep Dive.
“IN THE NAME OF ZIONISM PEOPLE ARE BEING KILLED”
Francesca Albanese is weighing in on the most explosive political fight in Britain right now: the Green Party’s “Zionism is racism” motion.
The motion, adopted at the party’s conference in Brighton earlier this month, defines Zionism as racism and backs a single democratic Palestinian state across historic Palestine, with equal rights for all. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called it “wrong” and “antisemitic” at Prime Minister’s Questions and ruled out a partnership with the Greens while it stands.
Albanese disagrees. She praised the Greens for taking a stand in support of Palestinians, and argued that merging antisemitism with anti-Zionism is “dangerous.”
In the name of Zionism, people are being killed.
It’s a debate that’s splitting the British left. Jewish organizations condemned the motion, and four of the Greens’ five MPs, including Jewish party leader Zack Polanski, opposed it. Polanski also pushed back on Burnham, accusing him of conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism.
Two sides, one question: where does criticism of a state end, and where does hatred of a people begin? Albanese says the line gets blurred on purpose.
