OCTOBER 30: THE PEOPLE WHO MOVE THE WORLD’S CARGO SAY ENOUGH
Dockworker unions in France, Greece, the Basque Country, Turkey, Morocco and Italy are calling an international day of action “against war and militarization.” Together they represent workers at some 40 to 45 ports across Europe and the Mediterranean.
Their demands: an end to the genocide of the Palestinian people and an end to the US-Israeli wars of aggression in the Middle East. Each union decides its own form of action, from strikes to refusing to load cargo, based on what they call “a shared commitment to prevent the loading of death and destruction.”
Now Palestinian unions have joined the call, asking port, maritime and transport workers everywhere to escalate their solidarity. Their message: ports must not be used to move arms, ammunition or military equipment bound for war zones.
Think about what that means. Weapons don’t fly themselves to Gaza. They get loaded, shipped and delivered by workers. And those workers are saying: not through us.
We’ve seen it before. Dockworkers in Italy shut down ports last year. Workers in France refused to load machine-gun parts bound for Israel. When ordinary people who touch the supply chain say no, governments that keep approving the shipments look very small.
On October 30, the ports may go quiet. Share this. Tag your union. Ask what your port is shipping.
