LEBANON WHERE EAST & WEST MET IN FREEDOM & MUTUAL RESPECT

Charles Habib Malek was a Lebanese academic, diplomat, philosopher, and politician. He is best known for participating in the drafting of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He served as the Lebanese representative to the United Nations, the President of the Commission on Human Rights and the United Nations General Assembly, a member of the Lebanese Cabinet, the head of the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education and of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, as well as being a theologian.
In this historic video Malek is asked what Lebanon’s role is in the Middle East. Malek replies that it is Lebanon’s mixed communities, Muslim and Christian and many other religions, live together in harmony and respect that truly distinguishes Lebanon in the region and in fact, he says, in the world.
Whilst Lebanon’s recent history has been flagged by turmoil, conflict, political unrest and civil war, it is important to remember that not so long ago, cooperation, communication, collaboration, acceptance, and peace existed throughout Lebanon. Religion was never the issue that brought the Lebanese to arms against one another, but rather it was and still is the political spin that political leaders use to divide our people which has weakend our country and compromised our formerly leading role in the region.
It’s time all Lebanese remembered the power of our collective mosaic and started protecting it as if our lives depended on it because the weaker and more divided we are, the easier the enemy can penetrate our world and destroy us and take Lebanon.
