BREAKING NEWS ISRAEL ASSASSINATED HAMAS CHIEF IN IRAN
July 31, 2024Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a predawn airstrike in the Iranian capital Wednesday, Iran said, blaming Israel for a shock assassination that risks escalating the conflict even as the U.S. and other nations were scrambling to prevent an all-out regional war. Iran’s supreme leader vowed revenge against Israel.
There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s Oct. 7 attack.
The strike came just after Haniyeh had attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president in Tehran — and only hours after Israel targeted a top commander in Iran’s ally Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
The dramatic assassination of Hamas’s top political leader threatened to reverberate throughout the region’s intertwined conflicts. Most explosively, the strike in Tehran could push Iran and Israel into direct conflict if Iran retaliates.

Al Jazeera Correspondent: Hamas has released a statement on its official website and it says: “brother, leader and martyr Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, has been killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president”. So a statement there from Hamas. Hassan, let me come back to you if I can. What does this assassination mean for the leadership of Hamas as a group?
Hassan Barbari: Well, it’s truly alarming for them, but this is not something new. Ismail Haniyeh is not the first Hamas leader who was assassinated. In 2003, they assassinated Ahamad Yassine, who was the spiritual founder and leader of Hamas. And then, a week after that, they assassinated Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi who was the number one leader of Hamas in Gaza. And this never finished Hamas, simply…(unclear), where naturally, it’s not like, as if Israel is fighting a mafia or a militia who is trying to attack Israel. Those people represent the Palestinian resistance. So Ismail Haniyeh, I mean sorry, Ahmad Yassine went in (unclear) and other people. So Ismail Haniyeh is one of them. I’m not saying that, I’m not trying to belittle the impact of that, on the Hamas leadership, but I’m sure that for them, that was expected. They are prepared to face this fate. But they are not prepared to give up, and say “okay, the occupation is good” and as if nothing is happening. So it’s going to be alarming for them, but I think we have to prepare for that.
