Cancer risks in Beirut have reportedly risen by 50% in 5 years. Experts say air pollution from diesel generators is to blame.

Lebanon’s dependency on diesel generators as a primary source of energy is KILLING ITS CITIZENS.

A study conducted at the American University of Beirut (AUB) found that CANCER risks increased 50% in five years due to the air pollution from diesel generators. The study measured air quality over a year and a half and compared the results with earlier measurements taken in 2017. It discovered that pollution from the diesel generators not only contributed to poor air quality, but it’s strongly increasing the likelihood of cancer and other health issues for those living near them. ⁣

Before 2017, generators were used to for 3-hours a day to fill the gap in Lebanon’s national power grid deficiency. Today, generators are the primary source of energy for the majority of households across Lebanon – IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.

A 2020 Greenpeace report also linked Lebanon’s high premature death rate in 2018 to air pollution.
